NJSP Assists with Food Drive to Benefit
Victims of Domestic Violence

West Trenton, N.J. - This October, which is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the New Jersey State Police will participate in a statewide food drive that benefits victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women is sponsoring the food drive that runs from October 1 to October 31. Non-perishable food items will be collected and distributed to local residential and non-residential domestic violence programs throughout the state.

Food drive boxes will be located at New Jersey State Police Stations and county Offices of Victim-Witness Advocacy buildings statewide, and anyone wishing to make a donation can simply stop by one of the locations to drop off items without having to make an appointment.

According to The New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women, 1,530 women in N.J. spent time in domestic violence shelters in 2012, with an average length of stay being 37 days, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence cites that one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

For more information about the October food drive, please contact the New Jersey State Police Victim Services Unit at (609) 882-2000 ext. 2375 or 2159. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 1-800-572-SAFE or visit www.nj.gov/dcf to find additional resources.
