State Police Arrest Man Who Fired a Gun at a Motorist During a Road Rage Incident on State Highway 55

Vineland City, N.J. - The New Jersey State Police have arrested Cary Speaks, 29, of Birdsboro, PA, for allegedly brandishing a handgun and shooting at another driver during a road rage incident in Vineland City, Cumberland County.

On June 20, troopers from Troop “A” Port Norris Station responded to State Highway 55 southbound in the area of milepost 35 for the report of a shooting. When troopers arrived, they discovered that a victim’s Ford F-150 was struck by gunfire as he was approaching exit 35. During the investigation, detectives determined that the driver of an unidentified white SUV fired a gun and struck the victim’s vehicle during a road rage incident. The victim provided a description of the suspect, who fled the scene traveling southbound.

Through various investigative means, detectives identified the suspect’s vehicle as a white Acura MDX with a Pennsylvania license plate and determined that Cary, who matched the description of the suspect, was the registered owner. On July 15, troopers from Port Norris Station and members of the Troop “A” Criminal Investigation Office along with members of the Robeson Police Department, Berks County Sheriff’s Office, United States Marshals Service, and Pennsylvania State Police located the Acura in Reading, Pennsylvania and arrested Cary at his residence in Birdsboro, PA.

A short time later, detectives executed a search warrant on the Acura, where they located an emptied magazine. Members of the New Jersey State Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit processed the vehicle and located evidence of gunfire inside the passenger's compartment. Detectives also executed a search warrant at the residence and seized a .380 caliber handgun,  which matched the description of the weapon used during the shooting.

Cary Speaks was charged with criminal attempt homicide, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged at the Berks County Jail pending extradition to New Jersey.

Charges are mere accusations, and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
