On January 26th Trooper Paul Grasso #6638 and Trooper Robert Williams #8263 responded to a call reference a kayaker that fell into the cold water, in Swan Bay, Brick Township, Ocean County. They located the victim and his friend at the edge of the marsh. The victim was duck hunting and fell from his kayak in the cold water. After his friend was unable to pull him to the marsh the victim managed to swim to shallow water where his friend dragged him to the marsh. Troopers Grasso and Williams located the two persons and placed the victim in the cabin of the Troop vessel and provided him with State issued Float Coats to regulate his body temperature. The victim was then transported to Traders Cove Marina to meet with Brick EMS and treated on scene for hypothermia, before being transported to the hospital. The victim was not wearing a personal flotation device when he fell from the kayak. Due to Trooper Grasso and Trooper Williams’ response and life-saving efforts, the victim did not succumb to hypothermia and was safely transported to the hospital for further medical care. Trooper Grasso and Trooper Williams’ exemplary actions are a credit to the Marine Services Bureau and a fine example of the positive outcomes that can be garnered from training,
experience, and knowledge of our waterways.
