On August 19, 2020, Atlantic City Station received a call reference to an unoccupied vessel that was aground on the beach in Ocean City, NJ. Station personnel quickly responded and further investigation revealed that a vessel accident had occurred. It was determined the occupants of the vessel were missing in the Atlantic Ocean, therefore a Search and Rescue Operation began. The United States Coast Guard Aviation Unit, NJSP Aviation Unit, Ocean City Beach Patrol, and Longport Fire Department were on scene to assist with the search. The United States Coast Guard Aviation Unit located the missing subjects offshore and deployed rescue swimmers. The operator of the vessel was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean by Sgt. Although one individual had died after entering the water, the surviving individual was transported to the Longport Fire Department’s dock for further medical assistance. Due to the seamless coordination of multiple federal and local agencies, quick actions, and expertise of the members of the Marine Services Bureau a life was saved.
