Breath Testing Unit

The Breath Testing Unit (BTU) of the Office of Forensic Sciences provides scientific oversight and support for the over 575 Alcotest instruments utilized by Local and State Law enforcement agencies throughout the State of New Jersey. These instruments are used to test over 25,000 individuals each year who are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The BTU certifies standard ethanol solutions which are used for the daily and semiannual calibration of the Alcotest instruments. In addition the BTU manages and monitors the upload of the data from each instrument to the public accessible Alcotest Inquiry Database website ensuring that the data is accurate, complete and timely.
